Teen Science Cafés are a great way for students to explore science and technology in a fun and informal setting. Led by their peers, these cafés bring together teens to learn, discuss, and experiment.

Why Attend?

  • Learn from Experts: Hear from scientists about their work and research.
  • Engage in Hands-On Activities: Participate in interactive experiments and projects.
  • Ask Questions: Get answers to your science-related curiosities.
  • Meet New Friends: Connect with other teens who share your passion for science.

Program Details:

  • Dates: One Friday a month, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
  • Ages: 13-18.
  • Cost: Free.
  • Location: Sturgeon City Learning Center
  • Capacity: Limited to 30 participants.

What to Expect:

  • Scientist Presentation: A guest speaker will share their expertise on a specific topic.
  • Interactive Activity: Engage in a hands-on experiment or project related to the presentation.
  • Q&A Session: Ask questions and learn more from the scientist.
  • Social Time: Meet other teens and discuss science-related topics.

Registration:

  • Pre-registration Required: Please register online
  • Registration Opens: The 1st of each month.
  • Late Registration: Not accepted once capacity is reached.

Important Notes:

  • Please bring a reusable water bottle.
  • Pizza will not be provided this year.
  • If you miss two registered Teen Science Cafés without notifying Sturgeon City, you will not be allowed to attend future cafés for the 2024-2025 program year.

November 15 - Fiona MacDonald

Fiona MacDonald is a registered veterinary technician at Valley Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center. Fiona MacDonald will discuss her career choice, the pros and cons, the schooling she went through, and more about her career pathway. Teens will be able see a physical exam on a live patient.

December 13 - Dr. Arcot

Dr. Anuradha Arcot works at Onslow Memorial Hospital as a Board Specified Pathologist and Cytopathologist. Dr. Anuradha Arcot will discuss her career, the schooling she went through, the pros and cons, and more about why she choose the career pathway that she did.

January 10 - To Be Announced

February 07 - Amy Pitts

Amy is the Senior Geologist for Education and Outreach with North Carolina Geological Survey for the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. She is bring various hands-on activities to include a geology escape room.

March 14 - Scott Stalker

Scott Stalker is a distinguished leader and speaker with over three decades of experience in the Marine Corps, encompassing roles in Space, Cyberspace, Intelligence, and Special Operations. He served as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for the Defense Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, United States Cyber Command, and United States Space Command.
