Family Naturalist Program: Explore, Learn, and Connect!

Ready to swap screen time for stream time? The Family Naturalist Series is your family’s passport to exploring the incredible natural world right here in Jacksonville, North Carolina. This six-month program, running from January to June, offers 10 unique, hands-on, environmental education sessions designed to make science fun, tangible, and relevant for all ages.
The Naturalist Advantage:
Every child under 18 receives a Naturalist Backpack, equipped with tools like binoculars, a compass, water bottle, and a nature journal at their first session. This kit is your essential gear for continuing outdoor exploration. To build your family’s resource library, you will receive themed field guides at select sessions to add to your backpack throughout the series!
Furthermore, each program session will feature an exciting drawing where two lucky winners take home a themed gift related to the day’s topic!

January 31 - Rocks and Relics 10-11am
Discover how the Earth's geological processes create, bury, and reveal the fossils that tell the story of ancient life.
February 13 - Nocturnal Animals - 6-7pm
Uncover the mysteries of creatures active after dark. We'll study silent hunters like Owls and the fascinating Echolocation used by Bats. Wild at Heart Wildlife Sanctuary will be here with a feathered friend.
February 28 - Scales and Tails - 10-11am
Families will focus specifically on reptiles and amphibians, learning about their unique characteristics and adaptations.
March 06 - Turtle Tales - 6-7pm
Families will learn about the various types of turtles, both sea turtles and freshwater turtles. With a special presentation from The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center!
April 10 - Wetland Wonders - 6-7pm
Studying the unique plants and animals found in local wetlands. Families will learn about the unique ecosystems of rivers and estuaries, and the creatures that call them home.
May 08 - Pollinator Powerhouses - 6-7pm
Families will discover the incredible world of pollinators, focusing on bees, butterflies, and other vital creatures that help our plants grow. Brandon Dillman with White Oak Green Team Apiary will be here with a presentations.
May 23 - What is Water Quality? - 10-11am
Understanding how water flows through a landscape and its impact on the environment.
June 06 - Coastal Birding - 10-11am
Grab your binoculars! We'll identify local and migrating bird species and practice observation techniques during a guided bird walk along the Sturgeon City boardwalk.
June 27 - Hands-On Crabbing - 10-11am
Learn about local crab species and their ecology, followed by a hands-on crabbing experience along the Sturgeon City boardwalk and piers.
